In meeting successful business people, it is obvious that they are committed, focussed and have a strong will.  Additionally, there appears to be an unspoken business mindset that underlies the steps and actions they take to be a business success.  Success, is of course, a very attractive addition to your persona and in some successful people acts like a magnet, drawing the right people to you at the right time for the perfect opportunities.

1.    Be Committed to your Business.

Anything worthwhile involves sacrifice. What will you give up?  Know that you will do what it takes to achieve a successful business while taking care of yourself and important people such as your partner and family, along the way.

2.    Be Committed to your Clients

Know that you will do what it takes to build a long-lasting and sustainable relationship with your clients.  And ‘relationship’ is the operative word.

3.    You always remember that without Clients, you don’t have a Business.

It’s that old chicken and egg mystery, isn’t it?  For you, your clients have always been there, just waiting for you to get it right.

4.    You adopt a “Stick With It” Attitude.

The best business achievers have spent years focussed on their business, developing their market and their client base.  They’ve gone through the downs and sailed to the top on the ups of the cycle.  Now, they are consistently acting and getting consistent results.

5.    To Get (succeed in your business) you have to Give First.

When you give with a sincere desire to help others, that comes across loud and clear.  We all like a giving person, because they make us feel better!  We feel like they are on our side, and understanding of our needs.  Whatever you give, you will get many times over in return.

6.    A Business Mindset accepts Business Realities

Tax payments, GST, BAS, accountant’s fees, staffing costs, training and development investments (not seen as expenses), marketing and advertising, and associated costs as a necessary part and parcel of the business.

I doubt anyone really likes these expenses, yet, when you accept them as being part of the overall good of your business, then you make the ‘cost’ pill much sweeter to swallow.

7.    Be a Leader!

A leader adopts a market-leader attitude and is constantly developing her or himself through education, coaching and training. They may appear to do it alone, yet there is almost always someone in the wings providing support or timely insights.

As well, the leader must plan and set the vision and get the troops to follow.  Without vision, your business is aimless and has hit and miss goals.

8.    Clear the Decks!

Be prepared to have little to do with people who pull you down, in any way shape or form.  You may find that the worst offenders are your family!

The best way to handle this is to stick to topics of conversation that are most interesting for the other party and avoid talking about your business success. Many Australians still espouse “tall poppy” beliefs, that can undermine your focus, if you let it.

9.    Hold Firmly to a Positive Outlook!

There are always positives about every situation.  Even the worst situation has potential for someone, so laugh at it, even if you’re having trouble.

10.   Be Totally Honest!

Be prepared to communicate honestly and with maximum attention to the feelings of your clients.  If this is difficult, get training in rapport skills and practice them with sensitivity and understanding.

When it comes down to it, soft skills such as listening ability, communication, and problem solving, are the real skills because your goods and products are bought by real people.
